Let me be honest at the onset – I was never a hardcore Star Trek-er and only developed some interest in the series after watching the first two films from the reboot series. There too, I started first with Star Trek Into Darkness, the second film in the series that came in 2013 and then curiosity led me back to the film’s prequel, Star Trek, the first film in the reboot series, that came in 2009. The film gave me more understanding of the Star Trek film series and of course, I got so hooked that I started from the start, navigating my way from the TV series to the film series. So some to and fro there, you see.
Now with the release of Star Trek Beyond, the third installment of the reboot series, I was curious to see how starship USS Enterprise was faring in its ‘five-year mission’ to explore new world and civilizations. And now after watching another spectacular presentation of Captian Kirk and his crew’s adventures in the space, I can say that I am gradually turning into a franchise fan.
Star Trek Beyond sees USS Enterprise, which is now three-year into a five-year mission to explore space arriving at a huge space station – Yorktown – to stock up supplies. While the crew takes shore leave, there’s some existential crisis going on in Captain Kirk’s mind as he contemplates about the meaning of the mission. But there’s not much time to ruminate about his existential disillusionment as an adventure comes calling and the Enterprise gets dispatched to a rescue mission on an alien planet. And Captain Kirk and his team tackling the aliens – Krall and his crew, forms the rest of the plot.
Directed by Justin Lin, of The Fast and the Furious (3-6) fame, Star Trek Beyond has actors Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto reprising their roles as Captain Kirk and Commander Spock. While actor Idris Elba plays the mutated alien and chief antagonist Krall, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana and Anton Yelchin too have reprised their roles from the previous films.
Star Trek Beyond has been getting rave reviews from fans and critics alike and given the blockbuster response the film is receiving at the box office, it sure makes for a must watch. So if you have not experienced this sci-fi extravaganza already, make sure you catch the adventure unfold on a theatre screen soon.
