If you love art house cinema and off-kilter narratives find a keen appreciator in you, then you must check out ‘India’s Finest Films’ on the movie channel, Zee Classic. On since mid-July, this special feature is a weekly showcase of ‘India’s Finest Films’, an illustrious collection featuring masterpieces like ‘Mammo’, ‘Salaam Bombay’, ‘Ek Doctor ki Maut’ ‘Massey Sahib’, ‘Pestonji’ and many such gems from the National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC) library. Zee Classic has recently associated with NFDC and under this association, NFDC has licensed 49 of its library titles to the channel out of which 14 films would be telecast as part of the ‘India’s Finest Films’ property.
Besides screening the films, the movie channel has also curated an hour long special feature called ‘India’s Finest Films – A Parallel Journey’ that aims at acquainting the new generation with parallel cinema. The show includes views of stalwarts of Indian cinema like Shyam Benegal, Mahesh Bhatt, Saeed Mirza, Kundan Shah, Rohini Hattangadi amongst others.
Films from this special collection are screened every Saturday at 10pm and this feature will run on Zee Classic until October 15.

If you have arrived here from my Facebook timeline you will probably recall my updates about some of the films from the ‘India’s Finest Films’ collection that I have seen – Salaam Bombay, Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro and Ek Doctor ki Maut being the most recent ones. The Facebook updates were picked up by many fellow cinema lovers on my timeline and they too in turn tuned in to the channel to catch the special films. The warm response to the updates is one reason for putting up this quick post – for the next film lined up for screening is – Gandhi, Richard Attenborough’s award-winning biopic on Mahatma Gandhi. You can watch this iconic film on the 13th of August at 8pm on Zee Classic.

A lot – mostly paeans – has been said and written about the film Gandhi – filmmaker Attenborough’s statement piece on the life and times of Gandhiji. Upon its release the film got a hugely positive response from across the world and won a number of big awards including eight Oscars. There are endless articles on actor Ben Kingsley’s awe-inspiring portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi. The screenplay of the film is available as a published book. Add this all up and you get a film steeped in charisma. So for cinema enthusiasts who enjoy good cinema and have not seen this film, the TV screening is a swell chance to check this epic out. If you miss the film telecast on the 13th, there’s a repeat screening on 15th August at 9.30am, so you can celebrate the 70th year of Indian independence with this legendary film. What an apt film for the special day.

I have not seen this film yet so I am definitely excited about watching it on TV.
